Volvo : 700 Series
Model Introduction
The Volvo 700 Series, introduced in 1982, was a bold departure from the softer lines of the 200, adopting angular, American-influenced styling under Jan Wilsgaard that proved controversial at launch — especially the upright rear window of the saloon. Positioned above the 200 in the range, it was offered as the 740 and more luxurious 760, later joined by the 780 coupé styled by Bertone. Under the skin it retained Volvo’s emphasis on strength and safety, with crumple zones, advanced crash protection, and a wide choice of engines, from frugal diesels to turbocharged fours and smooth sixes. Though its styling divided opinion, the 700 quickly gained respect for its comfort, space, and durability, and today it is remembered as a defining executive-class Volvo of the 1980s.
