Volvo : 164

Model Introduction

The Volvo 164, introduced in 1968, was the company’s first six-cylinder car in over a decade and served as its luxury flagship. Based on the 140 Series but with a lengthened nose to house the new 3.0-litre B30 straight-six, it offered smoother performance and a more upmarket driving experience. Styled under Jan Wilsgaard, it featured a distinctive upright grille, plush interiors with leather and wood trim, and improved equipment levels. Produced until 1975, the 164 helped Volvo move into the executive class, paving the way for the later 260 Series.
