Toyota MR2 (AW10 and AW11)

The original 1984-1989 Toyota MR2 ("Midship Runabout 2-seater") was a sensation when it was launched, the Japanese manufacturer cleverly spotting a gaping hole in the small sports car market that had been decimated years before by the hot-hatchback. The sharp styling and fantastic 4AGE twin cam engine (in the AW11 - the short-lived original AW10 had a single carb 1500) set the enthusiast world alight.

In 1986 a supercharged model was introduced, and the option of removable targa-top panels became available.

Prancing on a budget

Fancy a Ferrari? Most people do, if they're honest, but the ultimate drive-filler raises the tricky matter of £40,000 or so. There is another option though, and for £11,500, the Toyota MR2 gets closer than you might think.
