Renault : 16
Model Introduction
The Renault 16, launched in 1965, was a pioneering large family hatchback that combined the comfort of a saloon with the versatility of an estate. Styled by Gaston Juchet and Philippe Charbonneaux, it featured a distinctive fastback profile with a large rear hatch, adjustable rear seating, and excellent ride comfort from its long-travel suspension. It was the first European Car of the Year winner for Renault in 1966 and remained competitive throughout its life thanks to regular updates, including the introduction of TS and TX models with stronger performance. Produced until 1980, the R16 is now recognised as a landmark in practical car design.
