Renault : 14
Model Introduction
The Renault 14, introduced in 1976, was Renault’s first small family hatchback and the first model to use the joint Renault–Peugeot Douvrin “Suitcase” engine. Styled with a rounded, almost egg-like profile, it offered excellent interior space for its size and was praised for its comfort and supple ride. Despite an ill-judged advertising campaign comparing it to a pear, the R14 was a technically sound car with strong corrosion protection and good handling. Produced until 1983, it paved the way for Renault’s later success in the front-wheel-drive hatchback market.
