Porsche : 924
Model Introduction
The Porsche 924, launched in 1976, was originally conceived as a Volkswagen project but became Porsche’s entry-level model, marking the brand’s first front-engined, water-cooled production car. Styled in-house under Harm Lagaay with a sleek, aerodynamic profile and pop-up headlights, it used a transaxle layout for near-perfect weight distribution. Powered initially by a 2.0-litre inline-four, the range expanded to include the turbocharged 924 Turbo and the homologation-special Carrera GT, which achieved success in endurance racing. Affordable, practical, and technically advanced for its time, the 924 played a key role in broadening Porsche’s customer base and ensuring the company’s financial stability in the late 1970s.
