Porsche : 356

Model Introduction

The Porsche 356, launched in 1948, was the company’s first production model and set the template for decades of Porsche sports cars. Initially hand-built in Gmünd, Austria, before moving to Stuttgart, it featured lightweight bodywork, rear-mounted air-cooled flat-four engines, and slippery aerodynamics influenced by Ferdinand Porsche’s earlier Volkswagen designs. Offered in coupé, cabriolet, and Speedster forms, it evolved through several generations with more powerful engines, improved brakes, and refined suspension. The 356 enjoyed significant motorsport success in rallying and endurance racing, helping establish Porsche’s reputation for engineering excellence and driver engagement.
