Model Introduction
The Peugeot 309, introduced in 1985, was originally developed as a Talbot but launched under the Peugeot name after PSA rationalised its brands. Built at the former Rootes plant in Ryton, UK, and in France, it featured a distinctive, upright hatchback body that set it apart from the sleeker 205. Praised for its spacious interior and composed handling, it gained performance credentials with the lively 309 GTI, which shared mechanicals with the 205 GTI but offered greater stability at speed. The 309 played a key role in Peugeot’s 1980s range, bridging the gap between the 205 and 405.
