Fiat : 128
1969–1985
Model Introduction
The Fiat 128, launched in 1969, was one of the most influential cars of its era, introducing a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout with a transverse engine and end-on gearbox, an arrangement that would become the industry standard. Engineered by Dante Giacosa and styled in-house at Fiat, the 128 was compact, crisp to drive, and brilliantly packaged, offering class-leading interior space and lively performance from its overhead-cam engines. It was named European Car of the Year in 1970 and widely praised for its handling, ride quality, and ease of maintenance. Its platform went on to underpin a vast range of Fiat models and international derivatives, and even inspired the layout later used in the original Volkswagen Golf.
