Model Introduction
The Mercedes-Benz W124, launched in 1984, was a technologically advanced executive car that built on the marque’s reputation for engineering excellence. Styled under Peter Pfeiffer, it featured aerodynamically efficient bodywork, multi-link rear suspension for improved ride and handling, and a wide range of petrol and diesel engines, including silky inline-sixes and the potent 500E developed with Porsche. Available as a saloon, coupé, estate, and later cabriolet, the W124 combined durability with refinement, becoming one of the most respected and long-lived models in Mercedes-Benz history.

Mercedes, badly stung by Lexus in the States, replies by installing a 4.2-litre V8 engine in its mid-line saloon THE NEW 400E MERCEDES HAS many virtues and one big, perhaps insurmountable, drawback: it may never come to Britain, because it may not be built in right-hand-drive form. Although the car will definitely be sold in Japan, it will probably be exported there only in lhd guise because Tokyo's nouveaux riches like it that way, even if it turns overtaking into a kind of Russian roulette. But the 400E was, Of course, not primarily conceived for Japan; it was created for the North American market, to bridge the gap between the 300E and the new S-class 300SE and to face up to the inexorably suc-cessful Lexus LS400.
