Model Introduction
The Ford Capri Mk1 was launched in 1969 as the “car you always promised yourself,” a European answer to the American pony car concept. Styled by American designer Philip T. Clark who had previously worked on the Ford Mustang, the Capri combined long-bonnet coupe proportions with everyday mechanicals from the Cortina range. Built across multiple plants in the UK and Germany, it was offered with a wide range of engines from a 1.3-litre Kent four-cylinder to the punchy 3.0-litre Essex V6, allowing it to span the market from affordable style icon to genuine performance car. The Capri’s success was immediate, thanks to its striking looks, accessible pricing, and broad model lineup.
