Fiat : X1/9
Model Introduction
The Fiat X1/9, launched in 1972, was a radical departure from Fiat’s usual lineup - an affordable, mid-engined sports car with exotic looks and everyday usability. Designed by Marcello Gandini at Bertone, it took clear inspiration from contemporary concept cars like the Lancia Stratos Zero, with wedge-shaped styling, pop-up headlights, and a removable targa roof panel. Based on the front-wheel-drive Fiat 128’s transverse engine and gearbox, the X1/9 placed the mechanicals behind the driver to create a compact mid-engined layout which was rare outside of expensive supercars at the time. The original 1.3-litre model made modest power but offered superb balance and handling, earning it a strong following among keen drivers.
